Eight steel cabinet lines from four brands, compared from what each maker and store publishes. Here's who each brand suits, with the details below.

Pick NewAge if

You want a whole wall of matching cabinets topped with bamboo or stainless steel.¹²
You want to know how thick the steel is. NewAge lists 18 gauge³ for Pro 3.0 and 24 gauge¹ for Bold 3.0.
You want a tall cabinet that holds a lot. Pro 3.0's 36 in. locker is rated for 1,000 lb⁴ in total, second only to Gladiator's 84 in. Tall Cabinet here.

A line's ratings differ from one cabinet to the next, so the charts compare one tall cabinet from each line: the one named in the table below.

Gladiator Premier's tall cabinets range from 300 lb to 2,000 lb. The Tall GearBox and Tall GearLocker are rated for only 50 lb per shelf and 300 lb in total.¹⁷ Check the rating of the exact cabinet you're buying.

Cabinet dimensions

Gladiator's 84 in. Tall Cabinet, NewAge Pro 3.0's locker and Husky's Heavy Duty cabinet are all 24 in.³ deep. Bold 3.0's locker and Gladiator's Large GearBox are the shallowest, at 18 in.¹⁸ deep, which leaves more room to walk past a parked car.

NewAge's listed heights don't include the adjustable legs. With them, Bold 3.0's locker stands 75.25 to 76.75 in. tall and Pro 3.0's stands 83.25 in.¹⁸³ Measure under your garage door track and opener before you order.

Steel thickness

A lower gauge number means thicker steel.

NewAge gives a gauge for each whole line: 18 gauge³ for Pro 3.0 and 24 gauge¹ for Bold 3.0.
Kobalt's welded set is 24 gauge¹¹, and so is Husky's Regular Duty cabinet.⁹
Husky's Heavy Duty listing gives two gauges: 20 in its title and 24 in its description.⁸ Ask Home Depot which is right before you pay for thicker steel.
The Gladiator pages and documents we read give no gauge for either line.

Assembly and installation

Arrive assembled: Husky's welded cabinets and Gladiator Premier.
Some assembly: NewAge's welded frames and Kobalt's welded set.
You put them together: Gladiator Ready-to-Assemble and Kobalt's 2-door cabinets.

NewAge's guides and Kobalt's manual both say to anchor cabinets to the wall so they can't tip over.¹⁶¹²

Warranties

Husky: a lifetime "full warranty". The chart for garage cabinets says "bring it back and we will replace it for free".¹⁰
Kobalt: call Kobalt, or take the cabinet back to the store with the receipt, and it will be repaired or replaced.¹²¹⁵
NewAge and Gladiator Premier: limited lifetime warranties for household use. Neither covers scratches or dents that don't affect how the cabinet works, labor, or commercial use.¹⁶¹⁹ Gladiator's and NewAge's Pro 3.0 warranties also exclude corrosion.¹⁹⁴
Gladiator Ready-to-Assemble: the product pages say "10-year limited warranty".¹⁴

Fine print

Gladiator lists two ratings for its Tall GearLocker. Its product page says it "holds up to 450 lbs".²⁰ Its assembly instructions say 300 lb.¹⁷ Plan for 300 lb.
Gladiator's Ready-to-Assemble warranty is unclear. The Jumbo GearBox's page says "10-year limited warranty" but links to the lifetime warranty Premier uses.²¹ Ask Gladiator which applies.
Bold 3.0's ratings depend on NewAge worktops. The guide says the ratings apply "only with NewAge worktops installed".¹⁶
Kobalt's welded set has the same ratings as NewAge Bold 3.0. Kobalt's manual gives the same limits as NewAge's Bold 3.0 guide, cabinet for cabinet: 800 lb for a locker, 150 lb for a locker shelf, 100 lb for a wall cabinet and 600 lb for a base cabinet.¹⁵¹⁶
